Not at all! The self-cleaning litter trays we have chosen to stock do not require special litter. Some of the other well known brands have a sieve with very small holes, so therefore only sand size litter particles can pass through the seive. The resulting issue is, that all your litter ends up in the waste compartment!
That being said, we do not recommend non clumping litters or wood-pellet based litters for our automatic litter trays as they interfere with the sifting process.
